HIV Indemnity Insurance
As a physician, you may be at higher than normal risk for contracting the HIV virus.
If you ever become infected by this devastating virus, your group or individual health insurance plan may pay limited or no benefits while you are HIV-positive and asymptomatic.
You may even be required to stop practicing medicine. You could face both mounting medical bills and loss of income.
The HIV Indemnity Insurance Plan
- Pays up to $1 Million in benefits upon a confirmed first positive HIV diagnosis anytime during your lifetime while coverage is in force.
- Benefits are paid in addition to any benefits your traditional health and/or disability insurance plan may provide.
- Physician group rates are affordable and guaranteed for 5 years.
The Plan has a limited enrollment period that begins September 1 and ends March 1 of each year.

Features & Benefits
Lump Sum Benefit
The AMA-sponsored HIV Indemnity Plan pays a one-time lump-sum benefit of up to $1 Million if an insured person first tests positive for the HIV virus during their lifetime and while coverage is in force. This benefit is paid directly to the insured person and can be used for any medical, non-medical or personal expenses that they choose.
Benefit levels are tailored to the needs of physicians, residents and medical students.
Physicians can choose from five (5) benefit levels:
$150,000, $250,000, $500,000, $750,000 and $1 Million
Residents can choose from two (2) benefit levels: $150,000 or $250,000.
Coverage for a medical student is limited to a $50,000 benefit.
Rates Guaranteed for 5 years
Once coverage is issued, the premium rate is guaranteed not to increase for 5 years. Premium rates for this plan are based on the benefit level chosen - not age, health, specialty or income.
All practicing physicians, medical students and residents residing in the United States who are actively engaged full-time in the duties of their occupation, are eligible to apply for this coverage during any qualified enrollment period.
Note: Michigan residents must be AMA Members to be eligible for this coverage.
Coverage is effective on the date PMIC (Physicians Mutual) approves the application.
The Plan has a limited enrollment period, that begins on September 1 and ends on March 1 each year.
Renewability and Termination
Coverage is guaranteed renewable for five years from the date your Certificate is in force, as long as you pay premiums when due.
No claim will be payable under this insurance if such claim is caused by seropositivity due to vaccination, inoculation, or other intentionally induced HIV seropositivity.
The AMA-sponsored HIV Indemnity Insurance Plan is underwritten by Physicians Mutual Insurance Company, Omaha, NE.
