Today is Match Day!

March 17, 2011

To all you graduating medical students, congratulations! You’ve worked hard for this milestone achievement!! And whether you were matched up with your top choice or expanding your options in the scramble, you are about to face brand new challenges. I’d like to share a couple of tips to help you through this exciting, whirlwind time of your life.

Recommendations for Match Day

1.  If moving to a new geographic area for your residency, get auto and home (or renter’s) quotes from a handful of insurance companies. Companies can vary in their degree of competitiveness depending on the area. Staying with your current carrier might not be the most cost effective approach. You might be able to save significantly during the crucial residency period.

2.  Relocation loans are available to students. You can defer payments during your first couple years of residency. A loan like this can give you the financial boost to set you up for your next challenge. Here are the details for Sallie Mae’s Medical Residency and Relocation Loan. I encourage you to look at their competitors
as well.

3.  Stress levels are going to likely go even higher – if your residency program has an Employee Assistance Program (EAP), they will typically also have a pretty robust online resource. Everything is kept highly confidential, and they provide great information about managing stress and self-care. If you need more help, the EAP hotlines are there for you as well.

Best wishes for your residency!
